My name is Joel Andrew Klein and I recently graduated with a Ph.D from the Department of History and Philosophy of Science at Indiana University and I am presently a Post-Doctoral Lecturer in the History Department at Columbia University, as well as a research fellow at the Chemical Heritage Foundation. At Columbia I am working with Pamela Smith on the Making and Knowing Project, which is a part of the new Center for Science and Society.
I spent two years researching in Germany, first in Leipzig and Halle an der Saale through a Fulbright Grant and a NSF Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant, and then at the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science and the Freie Universität in Berlin via a DAAD(Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst).
The title of my dissertation is Chymical Medicine, Corpuscularism, and Controversy: A Study of Daniel Sennert’s Works and Letters, and I am currently transforming it into a manuscript.
I have worked as an editorial assistant and laboratory technician for the Chymistry of Isaac Newton Project, where I encoded Newton’s manuscripts and even recreated a variety of Isaac Newton’s and Robert Boyle’s actual alchemical experiments. Under “Experiments” you can see some of the work I have carried out in the laboratory.
I have taught several courses at Indiana University: X102 Plato to Nato – Science Revolutions, and X123 Sickness and Health – The History of Medicine in the Middle Age and Renaissance. The curriculum of the latter course was fully self-designed.
In Summer 2014, I taught The Emergence of Modern Science (STSC001) at the University of Pennsylvania.
